Timbers Defeat Mexican Side Club Atlas 4-2 On Penalty Kicks
Portland continued their winning ways Sunday night at PGE Park with a 1-0 win over Club Atlas from Mexico.
Portland and Club Atlas got off to a sluggish start in the first half as both teams looked to figure out how to play each other.
The Timbers struggled to get on the same page with one another as the players who started Sunday night's match did not have much experience with each other.
Portland failed to register a shot on goal in the first half as Atlas had six. They went to the half scoreless but play picked up in the second half.
Both sides became much more aggressive in the second half, and after numerous opportunities, it was the Timbers and George Josten getting off the schnide.
Moments later, Matt Pyzdrowski who was in goal for the Timbers tonight got a great save to keep Portland in front.
Atlas put a shot off the crossbar in the 90th minute, and then a Quavis Kirk penalty in the box gave Atlas a penalty kick on the final play of the game which they put in to tie the game in second half stoppage time.
That took us to penalty kicks where the Portland had a 2-1 lead through two rounds after George Josten and Alex Nimo made their shots and Jake Gleeson saved one of Atlas' shots. After another Jake Gleeson save, Rodrigo Lopez got the game-winning PK to win the match 4-2 on penalties. Below are postgame interviews with Gavin Wilkinson and George Josten.
The Timbers continue out of league play next against English Club Manchester City at the University of Portland's Merlo Field on July 17th in what should be an outstanding match. That one will kickoff at 7 PM with John Strong on the call and pregame beginning at 6 PM on 955 The Game.
